Magtection Targets Swine Industry for First Launch of Rapid Diagnostic Platform

Magtection is set to transform the future of diagnostics—beginning with a focus on one of the most urgent and underserved segments in animal health: the U.S. swine industry. After conducting more than 100 customer discovery interviews with veterinarians, producers and other key stakeholders, the team identified a clear and pressing need for rapid, low-cost, point-of-care testing solutions for infectious diseases on farms.

This strategic entry point reflects both market demand and significant opportunity. The U.S. swine industry generates approximately $20 billion in annual gross production, yet respiratory disease outbreaks remain a persistent and costly challenge—affecting up to 50% of herds during production. These illnesses are often complex and multifactorial, caused by a combination of viral and bacterial pathogens such as porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), influenza A virus (IAV), porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (Mhp).

Typical diagnosis today involves sending samples to centralized laboratories—a process that can take days and delay critical treatment or biosecurity decisions. Magtection’s patented Magnetic Particle Spectroscopy (MPS) technology changes that. The company is actively developing a prototype and plans to deploy its Minimum Viable Product (MVP) directly on farms, enabling pen-side testing and delivering accurate results in as little as five minutes, with most results available within 10–30 minutes.

The MPS system’s multiplexing capability allows it to test for multiple pathogens simultaneously—up to three analytes per test, with the potential for expansion—making it especially valuable for managing co-infections. It’s also built to be rugged and reliable. Because biological tissues and biofluids are nonmagnetic, the technology avoids background interference and performs well even in the variable, non-sterile conditions common to agricultural environments.

By combining on-site sample collection, automated processing and rapid results, Magtection eliminates the costs, delays and complexities associated with traditional lab-based diagnostics. Its entry into the swine industry isn’t just strategic—it’s a meaningful step toward improving animal health, reducing economic losses, and delivering accessible diagnostics where and when they matter most.
